Dutch Consumers Expected to Owe Three Times More by 2031

The Buy Now Pay Later market in the Netherlands is projected to grow from $5 billion in 2025 to $15.85 billion by 2031, according to Research and Markets.

So far, this has not raised concerns.

Adoption appears strongest in apparel, consumer electronics, and home improvement. Both online and physical stores now include the option at checkout.

Several business models coexist. Some platforms work alone. Others partner with banks. A few sit inside marketplace payment flows.

Klarna, Riverty, Billink, Confidis, and Oney lead the space. Analysts measure 90 indicators, including transaction volume, active users, revenue streams, and default rates.

Revenue flows from merchant commissions and late payment fees. Bad debt gets tracked alongside other metrics.

The Netherlands currently favors industry self-regulation over formal oversight.

As debt obligations triple over six years, this preference remains unchanged.
