Dutch Youth Groups Continue Military Training in Legal Gray Area

More Dutch teenagers are joining military simulation training through self-organized youth groups. These groups work outside traditional youth organizations, recruiting mostly through social media.

The Dutch Military Youth Organization (NMJO) reports participants aged 12 to 18. Members wear military-style uniforms and carry replica weapons during training exercises. The groups call this educational preparation for potential military service.

Law enforcement worries about replica weapons in public spaces. Officers say they struggle to tell replica firearms from real ones during emergency responses. Realistic military uniforms have caused confusion in areas near legitimate military training facilities.

The Netherlands prefers guidance over regulation here. No specific framework addresses youth military simulation groups. The activities fall between existing laws for youth organizations and weapons regulations.

This happens as government plans to expand military capacity move forward. Youth interest in military training grows while official recruitment efforts intensify.

Coordination between youth groups and authorities is expected to improve things.
