Netherlands Opens Facility That Turns Old Tires Into Four Different Products

King Willem-Alexander opened a pyrolysis plant in Delfzijl on January 30, 2026. The facility converts 50,000 tonnes of waste tires annually into sustainable marine fuel, circular naphtha, recovered carbon black, and tire pyrolysis oil.

Right now, over half of Europe’s waste tires get burned in cement plants or shipped to Asia. The plant will process 6% of Europe’s annual waste tire volume.

BP and Birla Carbon agreed to buy the entire output before full operation begins. The arrangement removes market risk for a facility that took 15 years to develop from concept to commercial launch.

The Deputy Prime Minister called it “green growth at its best.” Phase Two construction begins later this year to expand capacity to 200,000 tonnes.

The facility will cut greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 3% of the Netherlands’ chemical industry sector. It produces four revenue streams from what was previously waste.

Phase Two follows later this year.
