Dutch Government Declines to Request Explanation for Citizen’s UK Travel Ban

The Netherlands won’t ask Britain for clarification after UK authorities revoked the electronic travel authorization of Dutch citizen Eva Vlaardingerbroek on January 13th.

The UK said her presence was “not conducive to the public interest.” This followed her social media criticism of Prime Minister Keir Starmer. No appeal process exists.

Foreign Minister David van Weel said the government is “not a party to the case.” There’s no reason to step in. The Ministry noted no signs other Dutch citizens face similar restrictions.

Hungary’s Viktor Orbán commented on the ban. So did Italy’s Matteo Salvini and the U.S. State Department. The Dutch government didn’t.

Under international law, states have a right to protect nationals abroad, but no duty to do so. The Netherlands treats consular assistance as “a matter of tailored service” rather than legal obligation.

This is the first widely-reported case involving the UK’s new ETA system. The system became mandatory for European visitors in April 2025.

The approach is under observation.
